The Diocese of Kapenguria, in partnership with Emmaus Church, has established 10 churches and over 10 congregations that meet under trees. These congregations are composed of former warriors who have renounced violence, handed over their weapons, and embraced Christianity. The church partnership has also supported food security initiatives, addressing the community's immediate needs. However, despite these efforts, children are not attending school due to a lack of proper facilities. The community has contributed land, and the government has provided teachers, but the schools remain under-resourced. Currently, children learn under trees during dry seasons and in a church building during the rainy season.
Your donations will support the construction and outfitting of a classroom for Otuko Primary School, giving children a better environment to learn and expanding the school's capacity to take students. As children are educated and cared for by the church, their families are supported in their decision to move away from cattle rustling and toward other livelihoods, resulting in peace within the Pokot and neighboring communities. The diocese also plans a series of community meetings around this project that will raise awareness of environmental conservation by planting 500 trees.
The Diocese of Kapenguria is working to reduce illiteracy and improve educational outcomes in the marginalized Alale Community, located in West Pokot County, Kenya. Alale has long been a conflict zone, plagued by cattle rustling and poor living conditions due to a lack of basic social amenities such as schools and hospitals. The region is largely arid (85% of the land), making it difficult to sustain livelihoods, leading to unhealthy practices such as cattle rustling, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and early, forced marriages.
